Junior Consultant –Events and Communications

  1. Background

The African Development Bank (the Bank) is a leading development institution on the continent, focused on promoting economic development and poverty reduction. It engages with the full range and complexity of development challenges in Africa. The Bank has integrated operations, lending directly to the public and private sectors through a variety of instruments. It also provides advisory services to Regional Member Countries. The role of the Gender, Women and Civil Society Department is to coordinate and improve coherence across the Bank on Gender and Civil Society issues. In order to achieve its mandate, the department actively engages and builds alliances with external stakeholders, development partners and the civil society on promoting gender equality, women’s empowerment and civil society engagement.

  1. Rationale

To implement the Bank’s Ten Year Strategy (2013-2022), the High Fives (Feed Africa, Light up Africa, Integrate Africa, Industrialize Africa and Improve the Lives of African People) as well as the Gender Strategy (2014-2018), the AHGC department, is seeking the recruitment of a junior consultant to support the departments events and communications. The junior consultant will provide support in the management of events and the production of advocacy campaigns and communication materials to advance the Bank’s efforts to promote gender equality and engage with internal and external stakeholders.

III. Tasks & Deliverables of the Consultants

Under the overall guidance and supervision of Task Manager, the junior consultant is required to work on the following tasks:

  • Support the planning process for events from large events to smaller workshops of the department;
  • Assist in all communication materials, including intranet articles, blogs, brochures, press releases, talking points, videos, photos and other communications products;
  • Support branding activities and print production, which include brochures, roll-ups, posters, leaflets, posters, booklets, etc.;
  • Produce fact-based content, key messages, advocacy and outreach materials for a variety of AfDB audiences and their communications channels (key internal and external audience in support of AHGC work).
  • Assist in organizing press conferences, media interviews and other communication logistics for AHGC team during key activities, seminars and conferences.
  1. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
  • A master’s degree in the field of the position (e.g. communication/journalism, international relations, political science, economics, development, etc.) or equivalent experience;
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience;
  • Good understanding of contemporary women economic empowerment and civil society issues in Africa and related approaches of international organizations;
  • Client and results-oriented with strong analytical and communication (verbal and written) skills, sense of accuracy and attention to detail;
  • Ability to deal with sensitive issues in a multi-cultural environment and to build effective working relations with colleagues;
  • Understanding of the newsgathering and media storytelling process;
  • Familiarity with Adobe Suite
  • Fluency in social media and social media management platforms (Twitter, Periscope, Hootesuite, etc.)
  • Sample(s) of past event management campaigns, noting level of involvement and event impact.
  • Sample(s) of past communications materials, including articles, press releases, video scripts, etc.
  • Fluency in English and French;
  • Competent in the use of standard software applications (MS Word, Power Point, Excel);
  • Be a national of one of the member countries of the Bank.

  1. DURATION AND LOCATION OF THE ASSIGNMENT

This is a six (6) month consultancy, beginning on 15 March 2018. The Consultant will be based in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire and requires full-time presence in the Bank’s offices.

  1. REMUNERATION

The Consultant will receive a monthly lump sum. No additional benefits or per diems will be paid.

The Consultant is responsible for his/her own health insurance and accommodation costs. The Bank will cover full costs of any required missions and provide per-diem in accordance with rules governing consultant mission travel.

  1. ADMINISTRATION/REPORTING

The Consultant will submit a monthly report detailing the activities carried out and the status of each activity.
