In the light of the two (2) fresh cases of Wild Polio Virus recorded in Borno State, Rotary has taken the campaign for continuous routine immunisation to communities in Abuja.
Rotary has also called on families to accept the Polio vaccines and to support government and it’s partners to check further cases.
Over 200 Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Abuja-Gwarinpa and other Clubs in Abuja embarked on a End Polio Now Walk on August 13 to press home their message.
In the light of the two new cases recorded this week, our target is to end polio in Nigeria. We hope to achieve this by working with partners to strengthen routine immunisation infrastructure; develop a robust surveillance system; designate high quality immunisation days.
\’We are going to continue advocacy to ensure full engagement of political, traditional and religious leaders in the process,\’ President of the Rotary Club of Abuja, Gwarinpa, Angella Agbayekhai told newsmen.
She added: \’Communication is key to increasing acceptance of vaccination everywhere . It may interest you to know that there are cases of vaccine refusal even in the FCT. We there seeawareness creation as an effective tool for mobilisation.\’
She said the End Polio Now Walk was intended to mobilise government support for immunisation services and help diminish visible threats of complacency.
Chair of the Club\’s PolioPlus Committee, Nnenna Anekwe spoke on the need for the federal government to also contribute it\’s quota to support towards making Nigeria a Polio free nation.
Assistant Corp Commandant from the Zonal Public Education Unit of the Federal Road Safety Commission, Doris Alexander, stressed that the Commission was partnering with Rotary to create more awareness on Polio eradication.
